Alcohol Peer Support Services has a broad framework of understanding recovery.

It's the process whereby an person gains an understanding of alcohol dependency as well as alcohol related
health problems and recovery paths leading to an increased sense of personal control and ability to reduce periods of stress and the disruption it causes. It's about living with hope, coping with
good as well as bad days and having greater awareness and understanding of being expert
in their own recovery and having the capacity to have control of
their own lives.
Definition and Principles of Recovery
The Definition of Recovery Within APSS is:
“Recovering
from an alcohol problem is a process of change through which an
individual achieves abstinence and improves ones health, wellness and
quality of life.”
The 7 Principles of Recovery in APSS are:
- There are many pathways and no one set pathway to reaching ones recovery
- Recovery involves a personal recognition of the need for change
- Recovery brings on a continuum of improved health and wellbeing
- Recovery is (re)joining and (re)building a life in the community
- Recovery is supported by peers
- Recovery is rewarding
- Recovery is reality
